Tax Withholding

Your benefit is subject to state and federal income taxes. We can only withhold state taxes for Minnesota residents; if you are a non-Minnesota resident, contact your revenue department to obtain information about your tax liability.

You will receive a verification of your tax withholding after we issue your first benefit payment. Your tax withholdings are based on the criteria you selected on your retirement application.

How to Withhold Taxes

You can change your tax withholding any time after your first benefit payment has been issued. Update your tax withholding selection in your myPERA account or mail or fax your completed tax forms to our office.

Use Form W-4P to change your federal tax withholding and Form W-4MNP to change your Minnesota state tax withholding.

If you move out of Minnesota to permanently reside in another state, an address change alone will not stop Minnesota state tax withholding. You must make the change in myPERA or with the W-4MNP.
